GENDER AND TRANSFORMATION: WOMEN IN EUROPE WORKSHOP
NYU CENTER FOR EUROPEAN AND MEDITERRANEAN STUDIES
CALL FOR PAPERS 2017-2018

“Gender and Resistance in Europe”

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: JULY 10, 2017

The GENDER and TRANSFORMATION: WOMEN in EUROPE Workshop—a project at New York University with support from the Network of East-West Women—invites speakers to submit proposals for Friday afternoon talks for the next academic year at the NYU Center for European and Mediterranean Studies.

As is our usual practice, we are looking for speakers to discuss gender, sexuality, or women in Europe or Eurasia. For the academic year 2017-2018, we are particularly (but not only) interested in speakers addressing resistance to the many threats to gender equality and gender studies in Europe that have come as part of the rise of illiberal populism, nationalism, or the global right.  This can include resistance to “anti-genderism,” to attempts to roll back gender equality policy and practice (such as on reproductive rights and gender violence), to attacks on gender studies, and to gendered attacks on refugees and asylum seekers.

The workshop’s focus is on the postcommunist countries of East, South and Central Europe and the former Soviet Union, including the Baltic countries and Central Asia, and their relationship to Europe and the European Union. Recent workshops have included such topics as critique of law faculties in Eastern Europe, women’s protests in Poland against banning abortion completely, and anti-genderism in Germany, Moldova, Armenia, and Russia.  Recent speakers have included Dubravka Ugrešić and Katherine Verdery.

The workshop is an informal and friendly group of about 20 feminist scholars, activists, and journalists who have been meeting for more than two decades and are knowledgeable about the region. This is the perfect space to present recent theoretical and/or critical work, empirical research, and critical and scholarly reflections on your activism.

We offer a small honorarium. We regret that we cannot cover transportation expenses to New York City or offer assistance for visas or accommodations.

To propose a talk, please email the following to Janet Elise Johnson (Johnson@brooklyn.cuny.edu) and Mara Lazda (Mara.Lazda@bcc.cuny.edu):

  1. a title for your talk
  2. an abstract of less than 200 words describing your proposed talk
  3. a one-page curriculum vitae or resume.
  4. your schedule clarifying which weeks or months you plan to be in or near New York City and would like to present (proposals for the Spring semester will be passed on to the spring coordinators Nanette Funk and Sonia Jaffe Robbins)

All proposals are welcome from the region and experts from the U.S. or elsewhere, activists or scholars.  We will get back to you as soon as possible.  For more information, see https://gendertransformationeurope.wordpress.com.

    CALL FOR PAPERS
    Spring 2013
Gender and Transformation in Europe Workshop
Priority deadline for proposals: December 7- January 2, 2013
We invite speakers to submit proposals for our Friday afternoon talks for Spring 2013. The meetings are from 4:30-6:00 PM at the NYU Center for European Studies in Manhattan in Greenwich Village.
We focus on the postcommunist countries of East and Central Europe and the former Soviet Union, including the Baltic countries and Central Asia, but we are also interested in explorations of gender in Western Europe and where possible, in the context of the broader issues and transformations.
The topic can be any issue on gender or sexuality in relation to your country. Your proposal should cover some specific area of empirical or theoretical gender research, activism, or expertise, for example (but not excluding other topics): women’s activism; gender and NGOs and/or transnational alliances, whether “east/east” or otherwise ; gender policy; gender in relation to current political and economic developments and crises; feminist political theory or historical debates in your country in relation to gender and current developments in the region; interaction with European Level networks such as the European Women’s Lobby; the EU, UN and issues of gender, sexuality or women’s rights; gender and justice, legitimacy and/or democratization in relation to developments in the region; gender and immigration; gender and right wing developments in your country.
We welcome approaches from gender studies, political theory, history, political science, anthropology, sociology and interdisciplinary approaches. This is the perfect space to present theoretical, conceptual, historical and recent field research or scholarly reflections on your activism.
The workshop is a small, informal, and friendly group of about 20 feminist scholars, activists, and journalists that has been meeting for more than 15 years. The members are knowledgeable about the region. We have general background information, so general talks are not relevant for this group. We offer an honorarium; however, we regret that we cannot cover transportation expenses to New York City.
